- Update -

Well (I'm going to start counting how many of my posts start out with "Well..." ;), I've been posting very little, and I've explained why (work, school...).  But what do I do in my spare time?

Well, I just finished reading a book that my Grandparents gave me for Christmas.  :)  I also spend time playing with our two indoor cats...  That's why I always have scratches on my arms...  :D  I watch movies with my family, play games with them, go places with them, and a lot of those good things.  :)  One MBM truck guy asked me how in the world my parents kept a hold on me (he asked in a good way, he wanted to know because he has a son), and I told him -besides the obvious answer- that they kept me busy doing good things, reading good books, and playing with good friends.  :)  And that's what I do, pretty much.

I also got out with my sister to play Frisbee today (A good idea since it's mostly good weather around the U.S.), and my operator is going to take me and his son out to eat tonight.  :)  It's a reward for reading a Proverb a day from mid-August to January.  :)

That's pretty much what I do...  :)

  1. What was the book you read?

I am reading Jefferson Davis's Rise And Fall of the Confederate Government.

  2. The book was a collection of short stories (The Frontier Collection) from Louis L'Amour. :) I think most of it was fictional, but it said that he wrote the book from personal experience and a lot of History research. It provides a good look into ranchers' lives and those of desert men.

I'm currently reading God and Government ii (Gary Demar) for school. That's where I got that first "What if?" from. He's a smart guy.

*Disclaimer - I hear ideas people have and then look at them through Biblical glasses and then talk about it with friends... Although that one is a Biblical principal that I knew before, but it was good to talk about it again in with different people.*

  3. Yep. Mr. Demar is a very wise man...I think I disagree with him on voting principles, but his understanding of government is very solid.

I've heard a lot about the God and Government books. Maybe I'll starting reading them sometime...another book or series of books, I should say, I've considered reading for a while, is R. J. Rushdoony's Institutes of Biblical Law.

By the way, have you ever heard of the Book of Psalms for Singing?

  4. You mean a Psalter? Or a specific book named "Book of Psalms for Singing"??

Hmmmm... I don't think we have that series (the Rushdoony ones). My way of picking books to read - if you have it, read it! :D But yeah, we started watching his film series about the 10 commandments, and that was really good!

  5. I love Psalters, the Scottish Psalter of 1650 specifically, but I most commonly sing out of a psalter called the Book of Psalms for Singing. It's in the same hymn style as older psalters. The music is printed like a modern hymnal (some of the older psalters are harder to read musically) The language is dignified and reverent, but in more modern English than the older psalters. Very traditional style, which I like. Not so big on the really "fluffy" modern choruses...it's refreshing to see people write really good poetry nowadays, or take Scripture and make good poetry out of it.

Vision Forum sells the Book of Psalms for Singing.

My friend Peter Bringe (www.forchristskingdom.blogspot.com) is going through Rushdoony's series on the ten commandments as well, apparently...I've got his recommendation on it, so maybe I'll buy it one of these days.

BTW, I read lots of free ebooks in pdf format, (that's where a lot of my reading comes from) because we don't have that many large books. If you want some good places to find them, and some good books I've read, just ask. Archive.org and Google books are great places to look-the main thing is to know what you are looking for and to know what the good books are.

By the way, ever read any G. A. Henty or R. M. Ballantyne books?

  7. Hmmmm... I'll look into searching the web if
I want to read a book I don't have. :) Usually I would just borrow it from someone, but sometimes your friends don't have those books either.

You bet I've read Ballantyne and Henty! :) It's been awhile, but we get Hentys whenever we see them (antique shops, book stores, etc), so we have a couple that VF doesn't sell! :)

That's awesome about Courageous! :) Want to come down and watch it with us? ;D

  8. Of course I WANT to come down and watch it with you...oh well!

What's your favorite Ballantyne or Henty book?

My favorite Ballantyne is probably Hunted and Harried, but I really like The Young Fur Traders as well.

Favorite Henty: In Freedom's Cause, hands down.

Great website on both authors: www.ballantynethebrave.com

  9. Well, it's been a while since I've read them... I'd say my favorite one was "Beric the Briton". The main character was a real man. :) I also really liked "Out on the Pampas". Ballantyne - I liked "The Gorilla Hunters". ;)

  11. BTW the article I sent you did win, and for it Dan and I will recieve Jonathan Park communicator watches, which is neat, although I must say knowing that the article is that well-written means a lot more to us than the prize.

I read the Gorilla Hunters myself. Definitely one of my favorites. Ballantyne's Martin Rattler is great too, as well as Fighting the Flames and The Dog Crusoe. A lot of people like The Coral Island. Personally, I think the first half is fantastic, but I didn't like the second half so much...got a bit graphic for my taste. I've probably read at least half a dozen other Ballantynes as well and would recommend all of them.

www.ballantynethebrave.com is a website devoted to Christian young men's literature, particularly Ballantyne and Henty. I've written a couple of poems that have been posted on the site...check it out.

  12. Nice! :)

Yeah, the Corral Island was a little too graphic... And even though it might have been true-to-life, did he have to put that stuff in there?

Is that the website that Joshua Phillips runs?

  13. Joshua officially ran the website until August 2009, when a friend of his, John Horn, took over, but Joshua still occasionally does guest posts.

  15. I think if you put all your buzz posts together you'd have enough to make another blog post. Not that I need an update, tho. Just sayin'...

LOL. Ya know the blanket we keep in front of the front door? Well, it's off to the side right now. And as I was just typing the paragraph above, it moved. LOL because GK's sitting under it. Seriously. It's hilarious. Anyway...

Glad you got to go to whatever you call that place that I can't pronounce. It sounded really sweet. And I'm proud of you for gettin' to go!!! :)

    Love ya!

  16. Nice, I just watched the new trailer. :)

If I took more pictures (or someone in our family did) I would probably post more on here... More doing than thinking posts...

  17. Great Ben Botkin music: visit www.northernsounds.net/members/56/

My favorites are "Uncertain Strings," "Special Forces," and "Mountains of Colorado."

Ben Botkin has a depth to his music that even most Hollywood-based film composers don't have. I love it.
